Breaking Mews: Justice Umar Frees 33 Inmates In Bauchi

ZAARGOSSIP

No fewer than 33 awaiting trial suspects regained freedom from the Bauchi Custodial Centre and other Correctional Service Centres across the State, courtesy of the State Chief Judge, Justice Rabi Talatu Umar.

Justice Umar who is the Head of the State Administration of Justice Committee constituted by the Bauchi State Governor Bala Muhammad to undertake quarterly routine visits to Correctional Service Centres with a view to reviewing cases of awaiting trial inmates who spent three and above years without trial in the bid to decongest such Centres.
The Committee which comprised of representatives of the State Correctional Centres, Directorate of State Service and the Nigerian Bar Association, among others, had during its first quarter when it started the assignment, released 29 awaiting trial inmates across the eight Correctional Centres in the State.
During last week’s visit, she reviewed cases of awaiting trial inmates with minor offences, most of who had spent five to six years without trial and released 26 inmates while seven others were released on bail, totaling 33.
The Chief Judge urged them to be of good conduct and exemplary behaviours in the society, having regained their freedom.
She warned that should anyone henceforth perpetuate any crime and finds himself or herself at any of these Centres, the story would be a different thing entirely as, according to her, she will not take it lightly with such persons.
Justice Umar also asked the freed inmates to seek forgiveness from their respective family members for committing such atrocities or acts and urged the younger ones among them to seek knowledge from school or any other learning centre or institution with a view to becoming useful members of the society.
One of the freed, on behalf of others, Inuwa Hamza Wanzam thanked God
and the committee for the gesture and said that their release will be an end to the Correctional Service Walls.
